Axolotls are funny little creatures that have captured the attention of aquatic enthusiasts and marine scientists for a long time now.

Axolotls are gaining more and more popularity among hobbyists and many axolotls are being chosen as pets, so what makes an axolotl a good pet?

Axolotls are good pets because they are hardy and not difficult to care for, so they are ideal for someone who has little aquarium experience. They are also quiet and kind companions that will be with their owners for many years if they receive the proper care.

The axolotl enjoys the presence of its owner and can show affection in its own ways. It mostly prefers to be underwater at all times and does not enjoy abrupt changes in its living space.

Why Are Axolotls Good Pets?

Axolotls are quiet, non-disturbing pets that keep to themselves and do not like other aquarium companions. They are good pets for both experienced hobbyists and beginners.

The only difference between experienced aquatic owners and new starters is that a beginner will need to do more research and preparation before welcoming their friendly pet.

Axolotls are a bit specific about their living conditions. Providing the right environment is essential for their survival. Once it is provided, though, the axolotl will live for many years.

Pros and Cons of Having an Axolotl

Let’s list some useful pros and cons that should help you if you are thinking of adopting an axolotl.

Like any other activity in life, taking care of an axolotl could have its ups and downs. It is good to consider everything before taking on such responsibility!

Pros

1. Axolotls are quiet and non-demanding pets.

2. They can be with you for many years.

3. They only need feeding 2-3 times a week.

4. Rarely suffer from illnesses or infections.

5. Do not require any special care on a daily basis.

6. You do not need to provide any other tank companions.

7. Do not need to be entertained or paid attention to in any other way.

8. They are not noisy, aggressive, or demanding and do not disturb any other inhabitants in the house.

9. They can be taught to eat from your hand.

10. Axolotls recognize their owners, will tap the glass when they are near, and even follow their owners back and forth when they are walking in the room.

Cons

2. Touching and petting an axolotl should only be done rarely and you must be very gentle. If you are a touchy-feely owner, then axolotls are not for you. Here is a good video that shows how you can touch an axolotl and the owner only does it about once per month:

3. Axolotls must be handled carefully as they are very fragile.

4. They require specific living conditions, without which they cannot survive.

5. Once conditions are provided, though, axolotls are easy to handle.

6. The tank must be of perfect size and impeccably filtered.

Are Axolotls Good Pets For Beginners?

In general, axolotls are good pets for beginners and are not demanding.

However, if you are not too familiar with the process of caring for an aquatic animal, you will absolutely need to do thorough research on what an axolotl needs in order to survive.

What Do I Need To Keep An Axolotl?

Tank:

  • Axolotls need a spacious tank(at least 20 gallons for one and an additional 10 gallons for each additional axolotl) that is long and wide in all directions. They spend 99% of their time walking along the water bottom and they need enough space to move freely.
  • The water in the tank must be properly cleaned and filtered on a daily basis to avoid contamination and eventual poisoning. Filters are required for cleaning and maintaining a healthy bacterial balance.
  • You have to test the water regularly (with test strips) to keep track of the bacteria levels and waste.
  • The tank must be placed in a cool, shady place without any direct sunlight.

Water

  • Together with cleanliness, the water must be at the perfect temperature for axolotls – 60-64 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • It has to be properly aerated and filtered. Keep the lid of the tank (if there is one) open at all times.

Interior

Provide enough plants, stones, pebbles, pipes, caves, or anything to hide in. Axolotls hide a lot and need to have hiding places to make them feel secure and protected.

Place enough plants to re-create a natural environment as much as possible. Moreover, plants will ensure a regular supply of oxygen. Also, invest in floating plants as they provide natural shade and protection from light and heat.

Diet

Axolotls are carnivores so they only eat meat. You can buy pellets that are designed for them at the pet shop and feed them 2-3 times a week. They also like worms like earthworms and blood worms that you should be able to get at the pet store.

Companions

Axolotls prefer to be by themselves and do not enjoy the company of other fish. If you pair them up with fish, they will try to attack and eat them. If you pair them up with another axolotl, the same will happen.

Axolotls shouldn’t be paired with fish anyways as they are susceptible to parasites and axolotls will try to eat anything that is smaller than themselves.

You can put axolotls together as long as you follow these rules:

  • Same-sex or there will be way too much breeding, not healthy for the female.
  • They must be the same size, or the larger axolotl will try to eat the smaller one.
  • You need 10 gallons for each axolotl, but we recommend 20 gallons for the first axolotl and then 10 more gallons for each additional axolotl.

Where Can I Buy An Axolotl?

Axolotls are not that commonly found in regular pet and reptile shops. They require different temperature conditions that are different than regular reptiles and fish.

Axolotls are available from private breeders and aquatic enthusiasts. You might also be able to find them at shows and exhibitions. If you are buying from a private breeder, make sure they are licensed and sell healthy and good-quality animals.

How Much Is An Axolotl?

They are not very expensive. A young one is about $20 and an adult one is about $35 – over $100 depending on the breed and color.

How Long Do Axolotls Live As Pets?

With the correct care, axolotls live up to 15 years. They are long-lived and survive on a diet of mollusks, worms, insects, larvae, crustaceans and at times small fish.

Provided you give the perfect living conditions to your pet, it will be your loyal companion for at least 15 years!

Conclusion.
